THE 1968 SHELBY MUSTANG 428 GT500KR

Its initials KR stood for King of the Road.

One of the most powerful and famous Shelby Ford Mustangs of all time, the GT500 KR is one of the most desireable Mustangs ever made. The GT 500 KR has also appeared in the movie Gone In 60 Seconds, where it was modified with a new chunkier front spoiler and nitrous oxide. The GT500 KR was ever after affectionately known as Eleanor.

The 1968 KR had Ford's new 428 Cobra Jet engine with Ram Air Induction and traction-lock 3.50 differential. Ford called the 428CJ its "bread and butter" performance engine that everyone could afford. The Cobra Jet engine was very successful at the drags and was Super Stock Eliminator Champ at the 1968 Winternationals beating the expensive Hemi's from chrysler.

The 1968 GT500 used a 428 Police Interceptor motor with single four barrel carburetor. In April 1968 Ford unveiled an even-hotter version of the 428 Police Interceptor with better breathing heads and much bigger exhaust manifolds. they and called the new Cop Motor the 428 Cobra Jet. The 428CJ was offered in the Mustang, Cougar, Cyclone and Fairlane models for 1968. The GT 500-KR's 428 had the same suspiciously low 335-bhp rating as other Cobra Jets, the factory following their corporate strategy of under rating power output on the high performance cars. Carol Shelby's KR version had diecast aluminum rocker covers with the words Cobra Lemans proudly broadcasting Ford's FE engine family victory over Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966 and 1967.

New Cobra emblems were added to the front fenders and on the passenger side of the dash panel. The Deluxe Mustang interior was once again used in the Shelby, available in either black or saddle. Shelby used a console which housed two Stewart Warner gauges-oil pressure and ampsand the storage compartment of it had a Cobra embossed top. All Shelbys came with inertia-reel harnesses with the exception of the convertible which used a unique padded bar system.
